A BRIEF HISTORY OF SUMMERHILL
One of two settlements established after the Civil War by William Jennings in 1865, Summerhill’s early inhabitants were freed slaves and Jewish immigrants. Wood’s Chapel and Clarke’s Chapel began offering worship services in 1866 within close proximity of each other. Wood’s Chapel subsequently became Allen Temple AME. Clarke’s Chapel’s congregation was mixed and sought to also promote education which it accomplished by holding the first classes of Clark College and Gammon Theological Seminary in its basement. Clarke’s Chapel was ultimately renamed the Lloyd Street Church.
Summerhill was one of Atlanta's most prosperous African American and Jewish communities, and was home to several of Atlanta’s influential civic and business leaders. Sam Massell, Herman Russell S. W. Walker and Leon Eplan are a few whose life began in Summerhill.
Leo Frank lived there. Boxer Evander Holyfield grew up in Summerhill. Today, Summerhill is home to such artists such as Young Dro, Ciara, and Yfn Lucci.

Great things are happening in Summerhill!  Here's how you can get involved...

OUR PLANS FOR REDEVELOPMENT

Spurred by the relocation of the Atlanta Braves Baseball to Marietta and the sale of the Turner Field Stadium to Georgia State University, the neighbors worked with the City  to create the:
Turner Field Stadium Neighborhoods LCI

Carter, the developers who own much of the vacant Georgia Avenue strip, confirm that a brewery called Halfway Crooks will occupy a two-story, brick structure on the north side of the street.  Carter’s plans call for eight to 10 retail slots, depending on how one building is divided.
Carter Redevelopment

Turner Field, the former home of the Atlanta Braves, has been transformed over the past several months into a modern football venue with reconfigured seating, 25,000 seats, new locker rooms and new concession options
Georgia State Stadium

We've been working together for years.  That's we call ourselves the "Organized Neighbors of Summerhill".  Check out our plans dating back to 1993:

OUR PARKS
Friends of Summerhill Parks’ leader, Bryan Adams, explained “Our overarching goal is to have a vibrant, cohesive community, to become a destination for families, businesses, and retail, and to have fun and active parks for all residents of Summerhill and the surrounding neighborhoods!”
