Southeast Atlanta Green Infrastructure Initaitive

7/11/2016

In July 2012, residents in Atlanta’s Peoplestown neighborhood experienced several days of rainfall which flooded several homes along Atlanta, Connally and Ormond avenues. The Department of Watershed Management (DWM) responded immediately to perform on-site inspections and a review of the collection and conveyance system. Under the Southeast Atlanta Green Infrastructure Initiative, DWM developed a holistic approach to flood mitigation and identified short-term and long-term projects to address flooding concerns within the Custer Avenue Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) basin.

Project Highlights
  • Following the July 2012 storm event, DWM completed eight short-term projects to provide immediate relief to residents including construction of bioswales along Crumley Street and in Rosa Burney Park and rain garden installation near Dunbar Elementary School and on Ira and Sydney streets.
  • In February 2014, DWM completed construction of a five-million gallon storage vault underneath the media parking lot at Turner Field as part of the City’s long-term goal to alleviate area flooding.
  • The Department is currently installing approximately six miles of permeable pavers in Peoplestown, Mechanicsville and Summerhill communities. Permeable pavers are designed to intercept, detain and eventually release stormwater that falls on roadways and adjacent sidewalks.
